WHY DOES PROPER BLUSH
PLACEMENT MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

When blush looks good, it makes your skin look fresh, flushed, and youthful. When blush looks bad, it makes you look aged, over done, and even sickly. Knowing the right spot to put your blush can change your entire look! It can awaken your face and enhance your complexion! Find your most flattering blush placement for your face shape below!

WHAT'S THE RIGHT KIND OF BLUSH TO USE
AND HOW DO I SELECT WHAT'S BEST FOR ME?

Selecting a blush type isn't as hard as you might think. Products that have similar textures are automatically going to work and blend together better. Liquid blushes go great with liquid foundations. Cream blushes go great with cream foundations. And powder blushes... well you get the point. But that doesn't mean you must only stick with partnering the same textures. It's all about how you layer your makeup and what kind of look you want in the end.

  • Liquid blushes are super blend-able and give a natural looking finish. Plus you can build up the color depending on how intense you would like your blush.

  • Cream blushes tend to give a dewy finish and have a skin-like look. You can tap them on and blend them with your finger tips, or apply them with a brush or sponge.

  • Powder blushes tend to give a matte finish and need to be put on after foundation has been set with a translucent powder. That buffer is important so the powder blush does not stick to the wet foundation and create patchiness.

All blush types have their place in the makeup world! It's all about how you use them and what kind of look you want to accomplish!

I've listed a few of my personal favorites below:

WHERE TO PLACE YOUR BLUSH BASED ON
YOUR PERSONAL FACE SHAPE

OVAL

The oval face is known as the "ideal" shape to have. Because it has a natural balance to it, traditional blush placement works well to compliment it's features. Make sure to not bring the blush too close to the center of the face as this could look heavy and almost cut the face in half. Placement on the outer apples of the cheeks is perfect and will give you a youthful looking flush.

ROUND

The round face shape is known for it's petite circular curves. In order to bring balance to the face, you want to make sure you're not adding to the roundness by creating circular shapes on the cheeks. The best placement is on the perimeter of the cheeks starting at the temples and bringing it down to the cheeks. This creates the illusion of length while adding a beautiful flush of pigment.

SQUARE

The square face shape is petite with straight angles all over. Adding a soft curved blush will help to bring balance to the squared frame. Placing it at a slight angle will add the illusion of length, which is exactly what a petite face needs!

OBLONG

The oblong face is long and thin with a combination of curves and straight lines. In order to create balance, adding width to the face is going to be very beneficial. Placing your blush in a horizontal way across the cheeks and nose like the photos below will help give the illusion of width and also break up the face length by almost "cutting it in half." This will give the most flattering natural flush to your face.

RECTANGLE

The rectangle face is long and lean and is typically the same width from the hairline to the jawline. It tends to have a strong jawline and chin as well. Blush placement in a curved direction across the width of the face will not only create balance but it will help give the illusion of width across the face.

HEART

The heart face tends to have a wide hairline and long forehead. This shape carries a lot of its features in the bottom half of the face. Centering blush on the apples of the cheeks will help to create balance and focus the eye towards the center of the face. Heart shapes can handle a bit more blush because of their youthful structure and "sweetheart" feel.

DIAMOND

The diamond face shape tends to be widest at the cheekbones. The forehead and chin taper into a narrow angle shape. Adding a soft curved blush helps to create balance. By having the blush start high on the cheekbone and then bring it down and towards the center of the face, this will narrow the width of the outward cheekbones.

TRIANGLE

The triangle face shape is widest at the jawline and holds a lot of heaviness in the lower half of the face.  By placing your blush towards the center of the face, you will help to create a sense of balance. The cheekbones may even disappear on a triangle face shape, so being specific about blush placement will let the eye create an optical illusion of structure.
